The three deadly P’s of your home business are: Procrastination, Prioritization and Planning.

 

Home Business Procrastination

I believe that Procrastination is the biggest killer in your home business. You probably know you should do something, you probably even have it on a list but for some reason you are not doing it.

(BTW, I started working on this post on April 4, 2013 and finally finished it on August 1st; it must have been a low priority on my list).

One form of procrastination is called sweeping it under the rug. Basically pretending it’s not something that needs to be done. When, in reality, if you really concentrate on a task, you will be amazed how fast you can get it done. Just like this post, I worked on it, then saved it to draft, moved on to something else, tried to get back to it and now finally am committed to finishing the post today!

Next form of procrastination is passing it off to someone else. Come on, you know you’ve done this. Asking someone else to do something for you when, by the time you asked them, you could have had it done yourself. Next time you pass a task on to someone else, ask yourself “can I get this done faster and easier than the other person?”

One last item on procrastination is lack of skill. This happens when you need to accomplish a task, but you don’t know how to do it and learning it will take more time than you are willing to devote.

For instance, when I wanted to update my original website lube-direct.com. I knew I wanted to use web 2.0 features so that I could integrate social media and such, but I only had experience in html web design. First I tried to have someone else do it (pass it off), but the cost was way out of my price range. Finally, after breaking my toe one weekend, I spent 3 days learning how to do a WordPress website and updated my website. The good news is that skill that I took the time to learn now has helped me be more effective in all my online endeavors including this website.

You must weigh the time it takes you to learn the new skill versus completing the task. Some skills are worth it and some are just better to pass off to a professional.

Quit procrastinating and start finishing tasks that you can cross off your list. This is so important, especially if you need to get things that make you money done. We’re always going to be behind the curve and there will always be more things to do than you can finish.

I promise you, if you do what I say in this post you will get more things done, have more time to do other things and the quality of your work will increase.

Home Business Prioritization

One thing to remember is that you will never accomplish all of your projects or goals in your business. Starting a list of things that you would like to do or need to do is smart. The key is to prioritize that list so that you will get the most important things done first.

Next, determine those items on your list that need to be done today and what can wait. Use a calendar to schedule items to be done in the future.

When scheduling tasks on a daily basis, use a timer to help you keep track of your day. This is especially necessary for online tasks like Facebook and other social media. You would be surprised how fast an hour can go by just looking around on Facebook.

Multitasking does not work! No matter how hard you try, multitasking only takes away from productivity. You can say, well I can write a blog post and listen to a webinar at the same time when, in reality, both items suffer. Prioritize which is most important and do that first. Then after you get one thing done move on to the next.

Next, what are your plans?

Home Business Planning

Most people overestimate what they can do in 1 year and underestimate what they can do in 5. Planning and goal setting will help you achieve more than you can ever imagine.

One idea to assist you in planning is to have a mastermind group. This is a group of people you can bounce ideas off of and get feedback. This mastermind group could be your spouse, your business upline, a business networking club or even an online group.  As you mastermind your ideas, you will get new ideas and possibly learn to discard other ideas that you had before.

If you are not writing down your long term goals of success do this right now. At first, working in 3 month increments is a smart plan, then move up to a yearly goal and finally long range goals of 5-10 years.

For instance, we are working on a 5 year goal to build a new house out on some property that we recently purchased. Working toward a goal gives you a reason to wake up every day. It give you motivation, determination, and commitment to yourself and that goal.
